Our Treatment & Techniques

Every Treatment is Unique

At Natural Symphony, no two treatments are exactly the same.

Every appointment begins with a comprehensive consultation where your therapist will discuss your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, treatment goals and any relevant medical conditions. Where appropriate, a physical assessment may also be performed, including posture, movement patterns, range of motion (ROM), functional movement assessment and orthopaedic testing to help identify factors contributing to your condition.

Based on this assessment, your treatment is individually tailored using one or more professional massage techniques that are appropriate for your presentation, comfort level and treatment goals.

Many of the manual therapy techniques described in this document are most commonly utilised during Remedial Massage appointments. While some techniques may occasionally be incorporated into other treatments where clinically appropriate, Remedial Massage offers the greatest flexibility to combine assessment, clinical reasoning and a wide range of therapeutic techniques to address pain, movement restrictions and musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Every treatment is performed with your informed consent and within your comfort level. Consent is an ongoing process—not a one-time event—and you are encouraged to provide feedback, ask questions or request changes to pressure, positioning or treatment techniques at any stage during your appointment.

Throughout treatment, your therapist continually monitors your breathing, muscle guarding, nervous system response, tissue quality and overall comfort. Rather than working against your body's protective responses, treatment aims to work with your nervous system, encouraging relaxation, reducing unnecessary muscle guarding and supporting your body's natural capacity to recover.

Some appointments may focus on relaxation and stress reduction, while others may involve more targeted remedial techniques designed to improve movement, reduce pain and restore normal muscle function.

Treatment plans are continually adapted throughout the appointment according to your body's response, ensuring treatment remains safe, comfortable and appropriate for your individual needs.

Our Treatment Philosophy

Natural Symphony believes that effective massage therapy is not simply about applying pressure—it's about understanding how the body responds to touch, movement and the environment.

Pain is influenced by far more than muscles alone. Your breathing, stress levels, nervous system regulation, previous injuries, sleep, posture, movement habits and overall health all contribute to how your body feels and functions.

Our approach recognises that the nervous system plays a central role in both pain and recovery. For this reason, treatments are designed to encourage a sense of safety within the body while addressing areas of muscular dysfunction and movement restriction.

This means treatment may include periods of slower, gentler work alongside more specific remedial techniques, depending on what your body needs on the day.

Clients are encouraged to breathe naturally throughout treatment, communicate openly with their therapist and work collaboratively throughout the session. Massage should never feel like something that is being "done to you"—it is a therapeutic partnership designed to support your health and wellbeing.

Our Approach

At Natural Symphony, treatment is guided by assessment—not routine.

No two clients are the same, and no two treatments should be either.

Rather than following a standard sequence, every treatment is developed around your individual presentation on the day. Techniques are selected according to your health history, assessment findings, treatment goals, contraindications and how your body responds throughout the session.

Most of the techniques described within this guide are utilised as part of Remedial Massage therapy, where they may be combined to create a comprehensive treatment plan. Other services, such as Relaxation Massage, Pregnancy Massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage, use techniques that are specific to those treatments and are adapted to suit their unique therapeutic purpose.

Your therapist will always explain the proposed treatment, answer any questions you may have and ensure you are comfortable with the techniques being used. You are welcome to request changes to pressure, positioning or treatment methods at any stage of your appointment, and your consent remains ongoing throughout your treatment.

Our goal is to provide safe, professional, evidence-informed and compassionate care that supports your health, movement and overall wellbeing in a calm, respectful and welcoming environment.

Working With Your Body, Not Against It

One of the core principles at Natural Symphony is respecting your body's natural protective mechanisms.

Muscles often tighten or guard for a reason. Rather than forcing tissue to release through excessive pressure, treatment aims to understand why those protective patterns exist and to encourage change through appropriate assessment, skilled manual therapy, movement, breathing and nervous system regulation.

Many clients are surprised to learn that more pressure does not necessarily produce better results. In fact, excessive force may increase muscle guarding in some individuals. By working with your body's responses rather than against them, treatment can often achieve more comfortable and lasting outcomes.

Throughout your appointment, your therapist will continually assess your breathing, tissue response, movement quality and comfort, adjusting techniques and pressure as needed to ensure treatment remains effective, safe and appropriate.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialised, gentle treatment

designed to encourage the natural movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body.

It may be appropriate where clinically indicated for:

  • Mild swelling

  • Fluid retention

  • Post-operative recovery (with medical clearance where required)

  • Lymphatic support

  • General relaxation

MLD differs significantly from traditional massage and uses light,

rhythmic movements rather than deep pressure.

            Remedial Massage

Remedial Massage is a targeted assessment and treatment designed to address muscular pain, soft tissue injuries, postural dysfunction and movement restrictions.

    Treatment may assist with:

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Upper and lower back pain

  • Hip pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Occupational strain

  • Joint stiffness

  • Reduced flexibility

  • Muscle tightness

  • Chronic muscular discomfort

  • Recovery following physical activity

  • General musculoskeletal maintenance

Every remedial massage is individually tailored and may incorporate a variety of evidence-informed manual therapy techniques.

Relaxation Massage uses smooth, flowing techniques designed to:

  • Reduce stress

  • Promote relaxation

  • Improve circulation

  • Reduce muscular tension

  • Encourage restorative rest

  • Support overall wellbeing

Pressure is always adjusted to suit your comfort.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves applying gentle pressure to specific areas of the feet and, where appropriate, the hands.

Many clients choose reflexology to encourage relaxation, reduce stress and support general wellbeing.

Treatment Techniques We May Use

Every treatment is different. Depending on your assessment and treatment goals, your therapist may incorporate one or several of the following techniques.

Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage is carefully adapted for each stage of pregnancy using specialised positioning and support cushions where appropriate.

Treatment aims to provide a safe, comfortable and nurturing experience while helping to reduce the common physical discomforts associated with pregnancy.

Our Massage & Remedial Techniques

Myofascial Release

A gentle, sustained technique designed to reduce restrictions within the body's fascial system, improve tissue mobility and restore natural movement.

Neuromuscular Therapy

Precise manual techniques used to reduce muscular dysfunction, improve neuromuscular communication and address areas of increased muscle sensitivity.

Trigger Point Therapy

Sustained pressure applied to specific trigger points to reduce muscular tension, decrease referred pain, restore normal muscle function and improve movement.

Some temporary tenderness may be experienced during treatment.

Deep Tissue Massage

Slow, controlled pressure directed towards deeper muscular structures where clinically appropriate.

Pressure is always adapted to your comfort level—effective treatment does not always require excessive force.

Soft Tissue Mobilisation

A range of manual techniques designed to improve muscle mobility, reduce tightness, encourage circulation and improve tissue health.

Muscle Energy Techniques

Gentle muscle contractions performed by the client against therapist resistance to improve flexibility, restore joint movement and reduce muscular restriction.

Joint Mobilisation

Gentle passive movements designed to improve joint mobility and reduce stiffness.

Natural Symphony does not perform spinal manipulation or high-velocity thrust ("cracking") techniques.

Passive Stretching

Therapist-assisted stretching designed to improve flexibility, increase muscle length and restore comfortable movement.

Positional Release

Gentle positioning techniques used to reduce muscle guarding, encourage relaxation and decrease protective muscle tension.

Compressions

Rhythmic compression applied through muscle groups to improve circulation, reduce guarding, warm tissues and prepare muscles for further treatment.

Effleurage

Long, flowing massage strokes used throughout treatment to warm tissues, encourage circulation, promote lymphatic flow and support relaxation.

Petrissage

Kneading, lifting and rolling techniques designed to mobilise soft tissues, improve circulation and reduce muscular tension.

Friction Techniques

Targeted friction applied where clinically appropriate to assist with chronic muscular tightness, scar tissue mobility and soft tissue restrictions.

Silicone, Glass, Static & Dynamic Cupping

Natural Symphony offers several forms of cupping therapy depending on your presentation.

Silicone Cupping

Soft silicone cups create gentle negative pressure and are commonly used as dynamic cups that glide over muscles and fascia to improve tissue mobility.

Glass Cupping

Glass cups create controlled suction using traditional cupping techniques to assist with muscular tightness and fascial restriction.

Static Cupping

Cups remain stationary for a short period to encourage local tissue release.

Dynamic Cupping

Cups are gently moved across lubricated skin to mobilise muscles and connective tissue.

Temporary circular skin marks are a normal response to cupping therapy and generally resolve naturally over several days.

Diaphragm Release

Gentle techniques directed towards the diaphragm and surrounding tissues to encourage improved breathing mechanics, trunk mobility and relaxation.

Jaw Treatment

Treatment directed towards the muscles of the jaw, face and surrounding structures where clinically appropriate.

This may assist clients experiencing:

  • Jaw tension

  • Teeth clenching

  • Bruxism

  • TMJ discomfort

  • Tension headaches

Any intra-oral treatment is only performed with separate informed consent and strict infection control procedures.

Postural Assessment

Visual assessment used to identify muscular imbalance, postural adaptations and movement patterns that may be contributing to pain or dysfunction.

Range of Motion Assessment

Movement testing performed before and after treatment to assess flexibility, joint mobility and treatment outcomes

.

Functional Movement Assessment

Assessment of movement patterns to identify restrictions, muscular imbalance and functional limitations that assist in guiding treatment planning.
